No Official Merchandise For New Royal Baby

The dearth of merch brakes with recent royal tradition.

Both sides of the pond tend go gaga when British royals marry and have babies. That often leads to an outpouring of spending on branded merchandise commemorating the event – be it knot-tying or birthing. Just think back to the swag-splosion that occurred when Prince Harry and Meghan Markle married.

But Brits and Anglophiles hankering for official promotional products to celebrate the birth of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s healthy baby boy are going to be left wanting.

In a break with tradition, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex will not be releasing official memorabilia for their newborn – Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor.

The Royal Collection Trust, chaired by Harry’s pop Prince Charles, confirmed there will not be a line of Baby of Sussex memorabilia. The Trust released official merchandise when Prince George (2013), Princess Charlotte (2015) and Prince Louis (2018) were born to Prince William and wife Kate, the Duchess of Cambridge.

"We have no new ranges to announce," a spokesperson for the Royal Collection Trust told The Independent.

No reason was given for the dearth of merch. Perhaps it’s not the biggest surprise, though, as the Duke and Duchess of Sussex have shown a penchant to depart from tradition. For instance, they recently announced the arrival of their baby would initially be kept secret so they could celebrate in private “as a new family.”

While there will be no official collectibles, a quick Google search will find you unofficial items like the T-shirt below from www.teepublic.com. Archie’s name was announced Wednesday, and as time goes on, we expect more unofficial merch will soon hit online shopping carts.
