Trend Alert: Subscription Box Swag

Arby’s launched a merch subscription box service this week that sold out in an hour. That signals opportunity for promotional products pros.

Arby’s doesn’t just have the meats; it’s got the swag too.

The fast-food chain known for its roast beef previously proved its savviness with promotional products when it launched its “meat sweats” branded sweatsuits and then later linked up with Warby Parker in a quirky co-branding partnership.

Arby’s ‘Meat Sweats’

Arby’s was at it again this week, launching a subscription box service that delivers not food, but logoed merchandise. The restaurant announced the initiative on Twitter. Arby’s enthusiasts – of which, apparently, there are many – ensured the six-month long subscriptions sold out in about an hour. At only $25, why not, right?

As shown above, the first box features branded products that include an old timey Arby’s serving tray, beanie, bacon scarf and temporary tattoos. “Arby’s of the Month is the brand’s way of giving back to its fans in a fun and unique way by providing them with the Arby’s branded merchandise they didn’t know they wanted,” said Jim Taylor, Arby’s CMO. Fallon, Arby’s long-time agency partner, reportedly designed the box.

Predictably, Twitter had some well-meant laughs with the subscription box.

The Arby’s subscription box is promo products chucklery that’s enjoyable in its own right if you love the swag industry – and if you’re here, you probably do. Still, there’s more going on with this than just branded giggles.

As we have covered previously both here and again here, subscription boxes are a significant trend that doesn’t appear to be going away. We think there’s opportunity for merch to form either a centerpiece or supporting element for subscription boxes. For instance, box services that provide food or cosmetics can come with complementary swag. Meanwhile, musical acts – for which merch sales have been an increased focus -- can enable fans to sign up to receive merch boxes at regular intervals. Get your creativity cranking and consider other possibilities. Then, go capitalize on this ascending niche.
