Trend Alert: Pistachio Fashion Rules Fall

The light green shade is unisex and neutral, making it a great choice for promotional apparel.

Everyone’s going nuts over pistachio green. Harper’s Bazaar has called it “the next millennial pink.” Rihanna was recently seen decked head to toe in it. The muted, minty shade was all over fall 2019 runways, featured in collections by designers like Marc Jacobs, Jil Sander and Sally La Pointe, and it’s being incorporated into street style as well.

Pistachio could also bring a healthy tone to promotional apparel and products, particularly because it’s not gender specific. “It works well within a limited palette as it serves every customer equally,” says Vicki Ostrom, trend editor for Top 40 supplier SanMar (asi/84863). “As the trend toward minimalism becomes more popular, this simple pastel palette appeals to the calm and decluttered life many consumers seek.”

Christina Marcantelli, account executive for Top 40 supplier S&S Activewear (asi/84358), dubs pistachio a “new neutral,” a soft and elegant update on khaki that pairs well with both prints and other neutral shades. A refreshing change from the lime and neon greens that were trending earlier this year, pistachio apparel would be enhanced with a “crisp, white print or embroidery design,” adds Genevieve Lopez, content coordinator for Top 40 supplier Next Level Apparel (asi/73867).

Within the promotional industry, pistachio and other pastel greens have made a strong showing in fashion tees and fleece, though they haven’t yet made as much headway in polos, wovens or outerwear, according to Andrea Routzahn, senior vice president of portfolio and supplier management for Top 40 supplier alphabroder (asi/34063).

Still, with sustainability top of mind for many brands, expect natural, earthy greens like pistachio to continue to trend upward – perhaps for garments constructed from organic fibers or other eco-friendly materials – in the promotional market and beyond.

Pistachio’s appeal isn’t limited to apparel. “The color has a very futuristic vibe and is a favorite of many forward-thinking designers as well as top artists who specialize in digital art,” Ostrom says. “Because of this, color experts are forecasting that pistachio, light green, neo-mint, whatever you want to call this color, will also work well for tech-based products, like phone cases or Bluetooth speakers.”
