Musk: SpaceX to Accept Dogecoin Payments for Merch

The recent development is another interesting intersection between branded merchandise and the metaverse.

More Musk merch can be purchased with crypto.

Highlighting another new digital age intersection between tangible branded merchandise and the metaverse, multi-billionaire Elon Musk announced recently that fans of his SpaceX company will soon be able to buy the brand’s merch with Dogecoin, a cryptocurrency conceived as a joke and based on a meme.

Consumers can already buy merch from Musk’s electric-vehicle company Tesla using Dogecoin. Soon they’ll be able to do the same for SpaceX, a California-based spacecraft manufacturer that’s achieved milestones like being the first private company to send astronauts to the International Space Station.

Musk, who is CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, has favored Dogecoin as a cryptocurrency over competitors like Bitcoin. He has expressed an interest in accepting memecoin payments across his businesses. Dogecoin’s market value initially received a bit of a bump following Musk’s announcement on SpaceX merch and the cryptocurrency, but has since come down.

Hoodies, headwear, T-shirts, tumblers, mugs, patches, stickers, key chains and luggage tags are among the SpaceX merch offerings.

Word on SpaceX and Dogecoin payments comes as the metaverse becomes a growing, if still small, focus for some forward-thinking executives in the promo products industry. As ASI Media reported earlier this year, a handful of promo professionals are exploring how to turn real-life branded products into lucrative digital assets. Virtual worlds and goods are part of an economy worth billions.
