Product Ideas for Decorating Face Masks

Decoration equipment and supply manufacturers have been developing specialty accessories and design shortcuts for mask makers.

As the coronavirus pandemic rages on, face masks will continue to play an important role in slowing the spread. That means the demand for custom masks will also continue for the foreseeable future.

Although many people have built up impressive arsenals of cloth masks over the last year, it’s worth noting (and perhaps reaching out to your clientele and reminding them) that cloth masks should be replaced periodically, since the frequent washing needed to keep them sanitary will also break them down over time. Christopher Sulmonte of Johns Hopkins Medical told USA Today to think of masks like a pair of underwear. Rips, tears or even areas that are visibly faded or see-through mean it’s probably time to retire a mask in favor of a new model.

To help streamline the decoration process for masks, equipment and supply makers have been developing specialty accessories and design shortcuts. Here are a few recent offerings to consider.

1. Snap-on face mask platen

Polyprint DGT printer

Polyprint, a direct-to-garment printer manufacturer, now makes the two-in-one fit and flat snap-on face mask platen. DTG printers can use one main platen with two different setup options: the fit type for triangular masks and the flat type for flat masks. Swapping between the two types is a simple process, according to Polyprint.

“Its snap-on design allows easy placement and quick runs,” says George Benglopoulos, CEO of Polyprint.

The platen is compatible with TexJet DTG printers, though users will need to perform a firmware upgrade and software update to access face mask templates.

2. Mask design builder

Digital Art Solutions (asi/14970), an InkSoft company, offers Mask Builder, which it bills as “a complete design toolbox for creating graphics for face masks.” The design tool comes with 144 interactive vector designs, 60 vector clipart images, 48 editable backgrounds and 24 professional fonts. Each template can be adapted for sublimation, DTG, screen printing or heat transfers. An interactive mockup template is also provided in addition to the base template.

3. Three-layer blank mask

NameBadges International, part of World Emblem (asi/98264), offers this MaskFast MF3 elastic band face mask. Made of 100% polyester, it has three layers, including a layer of Pellon interfacing in the middle. Breathable, washable and reusable, the mask comes in white, gray or black, as well as prints including clouds, American flag, rainbow and camouflage. The mask is treated with Ultra-Fresh, a broad-spectrum antimicrobial aqueous treatment that keeps the fabric free of bacteria for at least 50 washes.

The entire front of the mask is printable with either a logo inside a 2.5-inch square area or the entire mask with a background design.
