Obituary: Harriette E. Shevin, Dard Products

For years, Harriette E. Shevin worked with her late husband Cary to make Dard Products (asi/48500) a powerhouse promo supplier.

Now, say family members, she’s being reunited with her partner in life and business.

Following a battle with cancer, Harriette Shevin passed away on Sept. 16. Cary, the longtime owner and chairman of the board at frequent Top 40 firm Dard, died in January of 2018. Both Harriette and Cary were 81.

Harriette’s daughter, promo industry veteran Bonni Shevin-Sandy, shared an emotional Facebook post on the passing of her beloved mother.

A woman of diverse talents, Harriette Shevin worked for 26 years as an occupational therapist and another 15 years with the family business. At Dard, she was active in a variety of roles – everything from administration to training new employees and much more besides. Cary’s father Jack founded Dard, with Cary and Harriette later growing the business substantially and transitioning it from the back of a printing shop to a larger building in Chicago and then a headquarters in Evanston, IL.

“My mother was essential to helping me become the strong entrepreneurial woman I’ve become. I never would have grown into such a person without her,” said Shevin-Sandy, a former president of Dard who was the first recipient of ASI’s Supplier Entrepreneur of the Year Award in 2004, in addition to being a frequent member of Counselor’s Power 50 and a former Counselor International Person of the Year.

As word of Harriette’s passing reached family and friends, positive sentiments poured in. “Harriette was an amazing woman – smart, sassy and constant,” wrote Carole Kleinberg in a Facebook comment to Shevin-Sandy. “A devoted wife to Cary, (she was) a deeply involved parent and grandparent who adored her family beyond words.”

In addition to Shevin-Sandy, Harriette Shevin was mother to the late Phillipp Shevin. She was the proud grandmother of Evan, Brandon and Zachary.

Memorials can be sent to the American Cancer Society, 225 Michigan Ave., #1200, Chicago, IL 60601, www.cancer.org and ORT America, Phillipp Shevin Memorial Fund, 3701 Commercial Drive, Suite 13, Northbrook, IL 60062, www.ortchicago.org and Multiple Sclerosis Society, 525 West Monroe, Suite 900, Chicago, Illinois 60661, www.nationalmssociety.org.

Following a December 2018 sale, Dard Products is now owned by Texas-based Official Issue. Shevin-Sandy is currently CEO of Diversity Promos and a designer for Top 40 distributor Cimpress (asi/162149).
