Dye-Sublimation: What Is It?

First things first: What is dye-sublimation and why is it so great? Sublimation is a chemical process where solids turn directly into gas, skipping the liquid stage – sort of like dry ice.

Sublimation printing takes this a step further. The sublimation ink is turned into a gas during the printing process, thanks to high temps of about 350-400°F. This allows the ink (now a gas) to permeate fabric fibers, which are now open to receive ink thanks to those same high temps. Once the ink gets inside those fibers and the heat is removed, it returns to its solid state, permanently bonding with the fibers rather than being printed on top.

The end result is an intricate, full-color graphic that won’t fade or wear over time. While other decoration methods might lose their quality, that’s not the case with dye sublimation. Graphics created using this method will look just as crisp and colorful on day one as they do on day one
