After first announcing late last month that it was banning selfie sticks on rides and attractions, Disney now says it will ban the popular consumer product everywhere in its theme parks. Beginning today, the company will not allow selfie sticks at Walt Disney World in Orlando or Disneyland in Anaheim, California. The ban will officially begin tomorrow at Disney parks in Hong Kong and Paris.
"We strive to provide a great experience for the entire family, and unfortunately selfie sticks have become a growing safety concern for both our guests and cast," said Kim Prunty, Disney spokesperson, in a statement about the company’s customers and employees.
Disney had tried to allow the increasingly-popular products into its theme parks, but just not on rides. However, according to Prunty, violators were forcing park staff to stop rides for extended periods of time, including last Wednesday when a roller coaster had to be shut down at Disneyland because of a customer with a selfie stick. Now, security staff at Disney parks will ask any customer that arrives with a selfie stick to stow them at a storage facility or return the items to their hotels or cars, the company said.
Selfie sticks, which can be logoed and are carried by a number of suppliers in the ad specialty market, have been increasingly banned at popular events and locations in 2015. The Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Guggenheim Museum have outlawed the device, as have music festivals such as Coachella and Lollapalooza. Major sporting events like Wimbledon and the Kentucky Derby have prohibited the selfie stick, as well.
