Alstyle, CPSC Recall Infant Bodysuits

Alstyle Apparel & Activewear (asi/34817), in conjunction with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and Health Canada, has issued an official recall for approximately 297,600 infant bodysuits manufactured in Mexico. The snaps on the crotch of the garments can detach, posing a choking hazard. While Alstyle has received one report of snaps detaching, no injuries have yet been reported.

The recalled short-sleeve bodysuits (model #1ZEE) are made of 100% cotton and were sold in black, blue, pink and white in sizes 6M, 12M and 18M. They have a lap shoulder construction and three-snap closure at the crotch. The words “Alstyle” and “Made in Mexico” are printed on the neck label and “CAT – # – J” is printed on a white label sewn into the left inside seam.

In addition to the 194,500 units sold in the U.S., about 103,100 were sold in Canada, via wholesalers and screen printers as well as at www.alstyle.com. The items were available from August 2015 through September 2017 for between $2.15 and $2.25.

In an interview with Counselor, Garry Bell, vice president of corporate marketing and communications for top 40 supplier Gildan Activewear SRL (asi/56842), Alstyle’s parent company, said that the garments were manufactured at one of Alstyle’s Mexican sewing facilities before Gildan’s acquisition of Alstyle in the spring of 2016.

“As Gildan integrated Alstyle’s manufacturing operations and products into our Global Quality System, we initiated testing protocols on these products and found that some of the snaps were defective and posed a possible risk to consumers,” Bell said. “We initiated the recall with the appropriate regulatory bodies, published these notices and have put in place the protocols and infrastructure to handle any returns of these specific products.”

Consumers are advised to immediately stop use of the bodysuits and to contact Alstyle directly for instructions on returning the garments and to receive a $10 Alstyle gift card per garment.

Alstyle can be contacted at (877) 562-1499 from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. EST Monday through Friday or at www.alstyle.com.

On Counselor’s most recent list of the largest suppliers in the industry, Gildan Activewear ranked ninth, with an estimated $150 million in 2016 North American promotional products sales.
