Company Culture: During remote work – and an uncertain and tumultuous time in Canada during the pandemic, especially in Ontario – communication has been paramount for keeping the team and operations at PowerStick.com (asi/51566) running smoothly. “We have weekly team meetings and an ‘open door’ policy for questions and feedback,” says Kim Dawson, marketing director. “This has kept the team engaged at all levels.”

The team’s collective “can-do” attitude has also helped to keep employees connected and engaged. Dawson says the group has a palpable “dynamism.” “Every day is different and there’s never a dull moment. We certainly have a ‘yes, we can’ solutions-based approach to projects and that means trying new things, getting creative and making it happen.” Employees agree, giving high marks on the Best Places to Work survey when asked if their talents were used well in the workplace.

Dawson says the team is passionate and loyal, with many long-time members. “Everyone pitches in at go time,” she adds, “and no one wants to drop the ball.”

COVID Changes: The team used to be all in person, but COVID compelled management to make the hybrid format permanent for the time being. “Hybrid has been adopted beyond the pandemic,” says Dawson.

Parting Tip: When looking to hire good matches for the company culture, be communicative and transparent about your goals for the position. “Once you’ve found the right candidate,” says Dawson, “let them explore their passions and strengths within the company.”
