Five Ways to Overcome Stage Fright

FACT: About 40% of people are afraid of speaking in public, according to Gallup polling.

1. When you have the chance to prepare thoroughly, do it. The more comfortable you are with the material, the better you’ll feel relaying it.

2. Record yourself. You don’t need fancy equipment, just use your phone. Take note of your pacing, cadence, use of hands and facial expressions.

3. Watch the recording and see where you can improve. Are you talking too fast? Are your arms flailing? Are you smiling awkwardly?

4. Never try to memorize things. If you forget a point, it could derail your entire speech or presentation. Instead, use trigger words or phrases to help you pivot between topics.

5. Exercise before you present. Even a brisk walk or a few jumping jacks will improve your blood flow. It’s a trick Tony Robbins uses all the time.
