What happens when you're a salesperson and you're in the habit of engaging in some negative self-talk? “You're in survival mode where you're saying stuff like, 'This is hard. I don't know if I can do this,'” says Gary Michels, sales expert and co-founder of Southwestern Consulting. “If you've got negative self-talk, then you've probably got poor self-esteem, poor activity and then unfortunately, poor or undesirable results. But you want so much more for yourself: That's called discovery breakthrough.”
The first step is to really decide what you want, what your goals are, Michels says: "That's what you want to have happen in your personal and professional life on a daily basis." A way to promote that is with positive self-talk, mantras like: "I want to rock it" or "I'm a winner" or 'I'm a mega-producer."
"Whatever you want in your life, you say those positive affirmations," Michels says. "What happens then is your self-image gets better."
