Study: U.S. Workers Not Using Vacation Days
Americans are taking fewer vacations than in years past, with more than half of workers leaving some vacation time unused in 2015, a new study finds. The report from Project: Time Off estimates that the lost vacations deprived the U.S. economy of $223 billion in spending on restaurants, home-improvement projects, hotels and other travel.
According to the study, the problem stems from smartphones and other technology that keeps employees tethered to their jobs. "The constant connectivity makes us feel so integral and indispensable that we have a harder time getting away," Kate Denis, senior director of Project: Time Off, told The Wall Street Journal.
Report: Import Costs Increase More Than Expected
The U.S. Labor Department reports that prices of imported goods rose in May by 1.4%, their biggest increase in more than four years. Economists had predicted an increase of 0.7% in May after April's upwardly revised 0.7% gain.
May became the third consecutive month of growth in import prices, marking the longest streak of increases since 2014.
Import prices increased in large part as a result of rising petroleum costs, which surged 17.4% in May, the largest gain since 1999 after rising 11% in April. Import prices excluding petroleum rose .4%, the first monthly increase since March 2014.
Counselor Commentary: Promo Products in Israel
When you travel halfway around the world, what do you expect to see? A reflection of your own culture and way of life? A distortion? Or maybe something else – a portal into a whole other world?
Counselor Executive Editor C.J. Mittica found out on his 10-day trip to Israel. The country is an anomaly: a modern, high-tech, first-world society completely surrounded by countries that are, to varying degrees, none of those things. He gathered that some things would be similar to our lives in America. But what would be different religiously? Culturally? And (most important) promotional product-wise?
Lead In Screen Printing Forces Children's Item Recall
Importer Far East Brokers and Consultants Inc., in conjunction with the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has recalled a set of children's folding chairs and swings due to excessive levels of lead in the screen printing used on the fabric. Sold under the brand name Leisure Ways, the items include a folding camp chair, a moon chair and a swinging seat, all decorated with large images of butterflies and flowers.
The products were manufactured in China by Zhejiang Haifu Leisure Products Co. Ltd. Neither Far East Brokers nor Zhejiang are ASI-listed. About 6,000 of the items were sold from January through April in Weis Markets and other nationwide grocery and drug stores and wholesale distributors. No injuries have been reported with the chairs or swing. The CPSC advises buyers to return the items to the place of purchase for a full refund.
