U.S. Manufacturing Performance Drops
The Institute for Supply Management (ISM) has reported that U.S. manufacturing shrank in December at the quickest pace in more than six years. ISM’s index of factory activity, which studies factors such as job growth and new orders among an estimated 200 companies each month, fell to 48.2 from 48.6 in November.
The contraction indicates that manufacturing challenges, including slow growth overseas, a strong dollar and low oil prices, will continue into 2016. Similarly, a recent survey found that manufacturing in China shrunk in December for the 10th consecutive month, signaling a weak global economy.
“The factory sector continues to struggle in the face of global headwinds,” Michelle Girard, an economist for RBS Securities, told the Associated Press, “and there is little reason to expect an imminent turnaround.”
In the face of low oil prices, energy companies’ demand for steel pipe and drilling equipment has decreased, which has adversely affected factories’ manufacturing of those items. Meanwhile, slow growth in China, as well as in emerging markets such as Brazil and Russia, has brought down export sales and profits overseas, and a strong dollar has raised prices on American imports overseas.
In addition, ISM’s report indicates a significant fall in manufacturing job growth in December, signaling cuts in workforces. This follows a general trend in 2015, during which manufacturers added a negligible number of jobs from January through November. While the amount of new orders was up slightly in ISM’s December report, numbers were still in contraction.
