The Lure Of Little League It's been a long time coming, but it looks like promotional products have finally made the team, or so it seems. Little League Baseball Inc., one of five national organizations for under-12 baseball, is opening the door to advertising from large national corporations such as Bank Of America Corp, which signed a deal with the league last year, reports The Boston Globe. Items given out so far have been logoed baseballs, sports equipment, water bottles, bags, coolers and score books. But it's not exactly cut and dry, says Micheal Creane, president of Kiwi Press Inc. (asi/243342).
Each of the national organizations has its own set of guidelines as to whether or not they're going to allow local or national sponsorship, says Creane. Little League Baseball insists that the national sponsors with whom they decide to partner are allowed to do the things that you see in that article, but they'll have no interest in having some other non-national partner be allowed to do what Bank Of America just did. On the other hand, Cal Ripken Baseball insists that their national sponsors not take part in sponsoring on the smaller level but they do allow for the opportunity for them to be recognized and get other sponsors that are appropriate to your event. So each of them handles it in a little bit different way, so I think it's about how we coach customers to present their materials.
Industry In The News Jeff Left Hook Lacy faced English boxer Robin Reid for the IBF Super Middleweight Championship this weekend in St. Petersburg, FL, and there was no shortage of trash-talking - or promotional products. Lacy first gave Reid a T-shirt that read, I Came To America And All I Got Was Knocked Out By Jeff Lacy. The favor was returned by Reid at the weigh-in when he presented his opponent with a faux boxing belt with a plaque that read, This Is The Only Belt You're Taking Home Lacy, made by Levy Awards & Promotional Products (asi/253170). In the end, the shirt won out with Lacy beating Reid by TKO.
The Montgomery County (TX) Courier published an article on Hispanic immigrants becoming entrepreneurs and focused on Oscar Cruz-Betancourt, co-owner of Daos Business Services (asi/175375). The story discussed his company's history and included several tips for creating a successful business.
The Wall Street Journal ran an article on the use and creativity of magazine advertisement inserts. Quoted in the article was Tim Clegg, president of Clegg Industries Inc. (asi/45450), whose company is doing a sound and light insert in Rolling Stone and Us Weekly for the WB show Supernatural.
An article in the Jacksonville Business Journal touted promotional products as a good way to broaden a marketing campaign and gave tips on how to select the right product and ways to imprint and implement them. Among the people quoted were Curtis McClees, president of Winning Concepts USA (asi/361965) and Deas Simms, founder of Promo Depot (asi/300408).
People On the Move Summit Marketing (asi/339116) has named Nina Worden senior modeling analyst at its St. Louis office.
Mark Moody, formerly vice president of Fundcraft Publishing Inc. (asi/55530), has formed his own company, Black Knight Press LLC (asi/40601), that will produce a line of desk calendars.
Tomax (asi/91435) has hired Maurice Chevalier IV as sales manager/Western region.
Mid-Nite Snax (asi/71685) has appointed Craig Fraum executive vice president.
City Printing Inc. (asi/168872) has added 20-year industry vet Phil Semon to its sales staff.
Bic Graphic USA (asi/40480) has hired Andrew Perelson as product manager and Melissa Salzler as assistant product manager in the marketing department.
