Cenveo Exec Resigns
Paul Reilly has resigned as chairman, president and CEO of Counselor Top 40 supplier Cenveo at the request of its board of directors. He will remain president and CEO until the positions are filled, and will at that time stay on as director. While the board searches for a new president and CEO, Susan O. Rheney will become the interim chairman of the board. Rheney was a principal at the Sterling Groups, the investment firm that formed Mail-Well, which later became Cenveo. She also served on the Cenveo board until 1997 before rejoining it in February 2003. Cenveo is the publicly traded parent firm of suppliers Discount Labels (asi/49890) and Lancer Label (asi/66220), and reported $41 million in sales in 2003.
Ohio Supreme Court Bans Cigarette-Branded Matchbooks Ohio’s Supreme Court has ruled that matchbooks are promotional merchandise and therefore can’t carry the name or logo of a cigarette brand. The state had sued R.J. Reynolds, saying the matchbooks violated the 1998 multi-billion-dollar settlement where tobacco companies agreed not to produce promotional products with cigarette brand logos. Reynolds had unsuccessfully argued that matchbooks aren’t merchandise. The decision by Ohio ’s highest court is not binding on other states, but given that the original settlement came about because of an unprecedented amount of cooperation among different state’s attorneys general, you might find more matchbook bans are in the offing.
Texas: Not Messin’ Opportunity is where one finds it - or creates it. For example, ever since its coining (in 1987), the phrase “Don’t Mess With Texas ” has appeared, officially and unofficially, on almost every product imaginable. Recently the Texas Transportation Department, which had the foresight in 2000 to register the slogan as a trademark, decided to use “Don’t Mess” as part of a program to keep Texas roads litter-free. T-shirts, mugs and caps imprinted with the slogan are being offered on the campaign’s Web site and will soon be made available at retail. Think about it: Almost every state - and most cities - could use a similar program.
Personalized M&M A recent item in USA Today noted that M&Ms, the well-known candy that refuses to melt in your hand and comes in all sorts of colors, has launched a line called “My M&Ms.” The difference here is that My M&Ms buyers can not only choose from 21 colors or color blends, but can also personalize the candy with any message they like. Each eight-ounce bag is $9.49, and a minimum of four must be ordered. A little steep for sure, but think of the promotional opportunities here.
Suppliers: Are You Home-Grown? We’re working on an upcoming article for Counselor about industry firms that manufacture their products in the good old U.S. of A. Are you a supplier to whom the phrase “Made in USA” is still sacred? If so, we’d like to hear from you. Please send an e-mail to Counselor editor Richard Kern at email@example.com.
