New Study: Incentives Mean Big Benefits For E-mail Campaigns
Incentives, including promotional products, significantly increase the likelihood that Web surfers will open e-mails and click through online ads, according to a new survey by Advertising.com. An incentive worked much better than a campaign which included more frequent e-mails. The study, done by Advertising.com’s Optigence research platform, compared three campaigns that used incentives to a campaign that used a bi-weekly newsletter with no incentive. Other findings, based on a study of 6.2 million e-mails:
- An advertiser who used a downloadable coupon with a monthly e-newsletter increased its open rate by 40% and had a 398% better click-through rate than an advertiser who offered nothing.
- The advertiser who had daily and weekly e-mails and offered sweepstakes entries and promotional products saw an 86% increase in open rate and a 502% better click-through rate that that “plain-Jane” advertiser.
- Another advertiser who sent out a one-time e-mail that featured an instant-win game and a downloadable coupon did best of all. Its open rate was up 133% and the click-through rate bested the control-group advertiser by a whopping 1,143%.

Narragansett Gets Extra Perks On Rhode Island TV News Narragansett Accessories (asi/279857) made a move for attention that paid off big on a Rhode Island television program. It all started with a feature on WJAR (Channel 10) that’s a dream for the promotional products industry: It seems there’s a morning anchor, Frank Coletta, who insists on sporting a coffee mug during the broadcast and has started to do a Coffee Cup Salute to whatever business provides him with a mug for that morning. Businesses that send in a mug (or sometimes another promotional product) get acknowledged on the air, and the anchor reads a short script about the company. Narragansett owner Gene Wills, being a bigger-than-normal-player in the coffee mug business, sent a bigger than normal coffee cup – one that holds more than a gallon, to be exact. Narragansett’s logo was on the mug, with the line “We do things in a big way.”
Industry Companies In The News Cutter & Buck Inc. (asi/47965) has been selected by The Golf Channel cable TV network as its 2005 official golf apparel supplier. The year-long partnership will showcase Cutter & Buck’s range of men’s and women’s apparel.
Mar-San (asi/68880) has signed an agreement with Craftsman Inc. making it the exclusive incentive and promotional products distributor for Craftsman products. Long associated with retail giant Sears, the 77-year-old Craftsman line has 5,000 items in 80 categories.
Betty Lou Olmsted of K Double K Enterprises Inc. (asi/238201) was named Community Volunteer of the Year by the Carefree/Cave Creek Chamber of Commerce in Arizona.
