More On Houze
As noted last issue, Wilson Bros., parent firm of Numo Manufacturing Inc. (asi/74710) and Houze Glass Inc. (asi/69125), will be closing Houze December 22. Houze’s name and asi number will be discontinued, and all Houze production will be done at Numo’s Kaufman, TX facility. There are no plans to relocate Houze’s 53 employees.
“There were actually a lot of factors, but the bottom line was that, with the increased cost of sales marketing, it was simply too difficult to keep Houze operating,” explains Mike Hicks, president of Numo, “That, plus
the fact that we have several major core competitors in the immediate area made it a very difficult market. We held on as long as we could, but it just wasn’t able to stay profitable any longer.” Houze’s annual sales were about $4 million.
Hicks believes bringing the line to Numo’s location will help sales: “We’re about a $20 million company now, and we see this as a positive contribution to our future growth. We will be losing some customers by relocating the line, but we feel confident we’ll be making that up with new customers in the South and West. We have a new large facility, and we’ll be able to market the line better than in the past.”
John Hailey Passes We just received word that John “Jack” Hailey, owner of Penway Inc. (asi/77260) in Smithfield, RI passed away suddenly late this summer. He had previously worked with Crownmark Corp and Hit Sales in New York.
Industry Companies In The News The Chicago Business Ledger ran a piece about how planning is key to small business’ survival in the current economy. Among those quoted was Brad Gooch, president/CEO of Ideal Incentive Inc. (asi/229486).
Just-Style.com notes that Veltex Corp. (asi/93505) plans to not only enter the surf apparel market, but increase its sales force by 50 by the end of first quarter 2005.
The Outer Banks (NC) Sentinel ran an article about the state’s Lions Club being honored for sponsoring an annual fishing tournament for the visually impaired. The last event drew 500 participants and over 200 volunteers. Mentioned in the article was Outer Banks Tees (asi/288421), which not only donated $1,000 but provided T-shirts for the event.
Maria Perez, owner of Adventures In Advertising/New Dimensions of Marketing (asi/109480) was the subject of an article in the Westchester County (NY) Business Journal about advertising/marketing to a Hispanic audience.
Libraries Laud Promotional Products The Ohio library system has dramatically boosted the number of inquirers to its librarians after a distributor got involved in promoting the free service. The promotion by Janway Co. USA Inc. (asi/233578) sent boxed media kits to 250 public libraries touting the launch of KnowItNow 24x7 on Sept. 7. The result: 21,000 virtual reference questions over the first two months. It was probably the busiest effort of its type ever, says the Library Journal, a trade publication. Janway is now helping spread the word to libraries in Ohio’s schools, letting students know they can get answers and homework help 24 hours a day. Among the marketing tools being used are bookmarks and posters. And questions keep pouring in: At last check, more than 30,000 answers had been provided.

LV Citizen Honors Troops A good cause will always be a good cause, but there’s no reason it can’t help a client grab some PR as well. A good example is Phil Randazzo, a Las Vegas businessperson, who decided after Thanksgiving to launch Operation Holiday Cheer, a rally to recognize our troops serving in Iraq and Afghanistan during the holiday season. As one might expect, the event involved TV/radio/newspaper coverage, as well as appearances by local entertainers, elected officials, and some families of soldiers who have been killed in combat. Randazzo even talked the area Air Force base into doing a flyover. But with all that, he (or perhaps his distributor) still thought of something else: several thousand appropriately imprinted T-shirts, wrist-bands and teddy bears, which were given out to commemorate the event. A nice touch, and one that can be repeated with nearly any gathering in any city.
