First Ever New York Pizza Show Includes Premiums The Big Apple’s Jacob K. Javits Convention Center recently hosted the first-ever New York Pizza Show, and included on the trade floors were exhibitors marketing magnets and other premiums. About 2,400 shop owners and other pizza professionals from 40 states attended the two-day show. The exhibition serves as a reminder how much business can be had from the local pizza shop (magnets, calendars, door-hangers, etc.). It also represents an opportunity for suppliers and distributors who might want to consider exhibiting at next year’s show ( Nov. 1-2, 2005).
ESP Named As “Model of Excellence” InfoCommerce Group Inc., a consultant and research group for commercial databases, has named ESP Online as one of its 50 “Models of Excellence” in 2004. ESP Online was cited as a service that “couples a powerful database of more than 650,000 promotional products with tools that help users create customized sales presentations.” ESP is published by the Advertising Specialty Institute, which is also the publisher of PromoGram.
Holders Are Hot USA Today and other papers report that the hottest thing among those who apparently have money to burn are branded accessories, such as cases for laptops, MP3 players, cell phones, PDAs and even water bottles. Examples: A generic polka-dot leather laptop case for $499; a Louis Vuitton MP3 case for $210; Chanel’s version of the same at a mere $685 (more than an MP3 itself). Seems like even more generic versions might be appropriate promotional gifts.
Ribbons N’ Bands – Rising Trends? Unless you live in Antarctica or extreme North Greenland, you’ve seen them - large ribbon-shaped decals or magnets, both designed to be displayed on your vehicle of choice. At first, the ribbons were yellow, with a bring-the-troops-home theme. Then pink ribbons touting breast-cancer awareness popped up, followed by patriotic red, white and blue versions. Now some camouflage ribbons have made an appearance, also bearing a troops-related message. The ribbons are becoming the new bumper sticker, with the vast majority being sold at retail. Of course, the promotional possibilities here seem limitless; virtually any business can subtly add its logo/name to any themed ribbon it wishes and give them away. An excellent way to gain good PR.
The Almighty T-Shirt
A few recent news items illustrating the power of the most popular promotional product on the planet – the T-shirt:
The South China Morning Post reports that in Hong Kong, Leung Kwok-Hung, a radical member of the Legislative Council, won his argument against Council President Rita Fan’s directive that all Council members wear collared shirts and jackets at meetings. The ruling prevented Leung from wearing his longtime trademark: a T-shirt bearing the likeness of revolutionary Che Guevara. His protests resulted in Fan withdrawing the directive, something Leung called a “victory for the people.”
Press Release Newswire ran a piece noting that T-shirts have become serious fashion statements, noting that designers are capitalizing by offering shirts not just with their own logos but with messages made trendy by celebrities. Two recent best-selling examples include the “Vote Or Die” shirts sported by Sean “P-Diddy” Combs prior to this year’s presidential election and the “Forgive U.S. ” shirt offered by Diones.com.
Despite sagging retail sales, notes Macworld Daily News, Apple Computer recently opened an outlet in London, its first in the U.K. To entice shoppers, the first 2,500 people to come in received logoed T-shirts (rather than imprinted computer-related products, as you might expect).
People On the Move ASI (asi/33020) has named Ivelissa Roche a distributor Internet coordinator and Brian Fitzgerald a member of the distributor membership sales team.
American Loose Leaf (asi/35555) has named Cindy Stevenson production manager.
AT Cross Co. (asi/47520) recently named Peter Canole vice president of global sales.
The Houston Promotional Products Association (HPPA) has elected new officers for 2005. They are: Ted Dennison, president; Andy Oakes, vice president; and Guy Dupuis, treasurer/secretary.
