Cross Drops Restrictions
As part of its plan to become more accessible and flexible to distributors, AT Cross Co. (asi/47520) has relaxed its formerly tight franchise set-up. Previously, only a limited number of authorized distributors could buy Cross products nationwide. Now, Cross has established guest account programs in each region. Non-authorized distributors can place orders to Cross through these programs. For more information, contact Cross at (800)722-1721.
Donations Requested For Troops Overseas In a gesture similar to what he did after 9/11, Dave Wasserman, president of DIW Visual Merchandisers LLC (asi/173886), is asking suppliers and distributors alike for donations of products needed by our troops in Afghanistan and Iraq. All you need do is send the items to him; Wasserman will arrange for shipping and pick up the costs. This isn’t planned as simply an offering for the holiday season, but will be an ongoing effort. Products needed include white socks, sweatshirts, hand-warmers, CDs and DVDs, batteries, flashlights/bulbs, sports equipment, magazines, crossword puzzles, razors, baby wipes, bandages, food (jerky, powdered soup, candy, gum, nuts, instant rice, non-canned tuna, cereal/Granola bars, canned chips, etc), can openers, lip balm, eye drops, tissues, toothpaste/toothbrushes, deodorant (non-aerosol), sun-screen, cotton swabs, soap/shampoo, power converters, small stuffed animals (for PR), sunglasses, writing instruments, writing paper, disposable cameras and phone cards. All donations should be sent to Wasserman at 21 Village Drive, Eatontown, NJ 07724. You can reach him at (732)870-3592 or firstname.lastname@example.org.

Founder of Bob Allen Sportswear/Air-Tex Killed In One-Car Crash Bob Allen, a world champion trap shooter and the founder of a company that made popular shooting apparel for outdoorsmen across the world, died last week in a one-car accident in western Iowa. Allen, 84, and his wife, Sari, were killed when their car veered off Interstate 29 in western Iowa Wednesday evening. Allen started Bob Allen Sportswear in 1946 with $40,000 he won in a shooting championship in France. The company made gloves and other shooting apparel. His clothing line was selected by the U.S. Olympic shooting team in the 1990s. “My father [Bill Vernon] helped Bob launch Air-Tex into the promotional products industry back in the 1980s,” notes Chris Vernon, president/COO of Vernon Co. (asi/351700), adding that Bob sold Bob Allen Sportswear & Air-Tex (asi/33260) to Norwood back in the mid-90s. The hunting/shooting lines were spun off by Norwood to Boyt Luggage about 5-6 years ago.
Pet Association Names 40 Best Pet Products The American Pet Products Manufacturers Association has come out with a list of 40 best gifts for pets, and some of their ideas can be found in the industry. One of the association’s suggestions, for example, was a greeting card for a dog that’s made of edible materials. You can find one of those at Pet Greetings (asi/77800). Another pick was a picture frame customized for a dog or cat; there are about a dozen suppliers who can set you up with that. Some others from our own list (after a check of ESP): a car seat that elevates your pets so they can see out the window, offered by HLM Sales Inc. (asi/58793), and a hand-free vest with a pouch to carry up to a 25-pound pet, also available from HLM.
Do You Sell Gift Cards? Distributors: Have you sold gift-card programs to clients? When a client wants a particular “brand” gift card (Target, Amex, Sears), do you source it alone or try to tie in a more traditional promotional product? Are there any special nuances to selling gift cards? We’d like to hear from you for a future Counselor article. Contact Arn Bernstein at email@example.com.
