Corp. Express Donates $200K
Corporate Express Inc., parent firm of Counselor Top 40 distributor Corporate Express Promotional Marketing (asi/168786), announced that its Colorado division has donated more than $200,000 worth of office and school supplies to the Aurora Public Schools in Colorado. The items were delivered November 5 to the Aurora Education Foundation, the non-profit arm of APS. The Foundation will, in turn, distribute the supplies to all 1,904 APS elementary and secondary-school teachers for use in classrooms by 32,000-plus students. Tough to get better PR than supporting education.
Weisbach on Tavis Smiley’s TV Show Friday Lou Weisbach, the founder of HALO, appears on Tavis Smiley’s PBS television program this Friday night. Weisbach, who left the distributor before its Chapter 11 filing and has nothing to do with current Counselor Top 40 distributor HALO/Lee Wayne (asi/218450), will talk about his latest philanthropic effort to rid the world of all diseases. Weisbach, who previously guested on Smiley’s radio program, appears again with Richard Boxer - a physician who was once on the short list for U.S. Surgeon General. Boxer and Weisbach are recommending a Cabinet-level position dedicated to disease cures.

A recent Salem (MA) News article talked about the huge welcome given in the Dominican Republic to the Lady Spirit, a women’s baseball team on a goodwill tour. But the team left its mark in another way beyond the diamond: It brought logoed caps, T-shirts, baseballs, mini helmets and more to fans and schoolchildren.
Political Buttons: Where Even The Losers Win If you did any business this political season, don’t throw those overruns away. Many political buttons for this year’s race could become valuable. The Philadelphia Inquirer recently ran a story about a meeting of the American Political Items Collectors where attendees were impressed by a Kerry/Edwards button that pictured a Democratic donkey pulling a Amish buggy. The buttons were given out in Pennsylvania’s rural Lancaster County, which hadn’t produced a local button for a Democrat since John F. Kennedy. Of course, the older buttons do the best. Two rare Teddy Roosevelt buttons have sold for $12,000. One for 1940 presidential candidate Wendell Wilkie went for $4,250 on eBay.
Getting Trashed: Confusion Over Philadelphia Advertising Scheme The Philadelphia Inquirer had a recent story that showed an embarrassing lack of attention to detail. City Councilman Juan Ramos made a deal with a New York company to put 30 trash receptacles around the City of Brotherly Love’s City Hall. The trash cans contained advertising, which was expected to generate $36,000 for Philadelphia. The snag: The trash cans arrived with stickers that said “Keep New York City Clean.”
