subsidiary Adva-Lite Inc. (asi/32145). Several rumors
were apparently circulating through the industry last week.
Huffy Sells Service Business The parent company of Huffy Sports (asi/62020)
has sold its retail services segment so it can concentrate
on sporting equipment. The business, called Huffy Service
Solutions, which includes in-store bike assembly and
repair, was sold to National Product Services Inc.
Product Service Inc. is a portfolio company of H.I.G.
Capital LLC, the equity company that owns HALO Branded
Solutions. Huffy had a tough recent stretch on Wall Street
and is now out of compliance with SEC guidelines for timely
filing after it delayed releasing its first-quarter earnings
Update: Lou Weisbach And Las Vegas Lou Weisbach, founder of Counselor Top 40
distributor HALO Branded Solutions (asi/218450),
appears to have taken a step back from his plan to bring the
Montreal Expos to Las Vegas. Weisbach, who is representing
the potential buyers of a pro team for Sin City, says now
that his group might consider another Major League Baseball
team or even a professional team from another sport. The Las
Vegas Review-Journal characterized Weisbach�s approach
as �backing off� and �taking a big-picture approach.�
Johnson Wax Founder Dies Samuel C. Johnson, the founder of the Johnson Wax
company, died last week of cancer. Johnson�s empire was
eventually divided into four companies. The company in the
industry, Johnson Outdoors Inc. (asi/63400), does
less than 1% of its business in promotional products.

Hotels Emphasize Luxury As They Increase Ad Spending
Hotels are unleashing more money on
advertising as the travel market heats up. Hotel
chains are pushing their higher-end offerings in media
messages that downplay price and emphasize amenities
and luxury, says The New York Times. With room
up 3% so far this year, hotels should have some money
for in-room gifts to maintain their customers� good
Promotional Products Group Explains Industry At Hong Kong
Show A relatively new group called the International
Federation of Promotional Products Associations (IFPPA) took
up the promotional products industry cause at the recent
Hong Kong Gifts & Premium Fair 2004. IFPPA is an
umbrella organization comprising executives from Promotional
Products Association International (PPAI); Promotional
Products Association of Canada (PPAC); AMPRO (Mexico�s
association); Australasian Promotional Products Association
(APPA); the Australian association; Promotional Merchandise
Trade Association (PROMOTA) in the United Kingdom; and the
European Promotional Products Association (EPPA).
Hong Kong show, IFPPA offered an exclusive seminar to
Chinese exhibitors. The seminar outlined the essential
structure of the promotional products industry, according to
EPPI�s email newsletter, Newsflash. Kurt R. Reckziegel,
president of the Canadian association, told PromoGram that
the seminars suggested to Chinese manufacturers that they
work within the supplier-distributor channel.
Focus4 Noted The Sonoma (CA) News
recently ran an article about Nicki DeMattei, president of
Focus4 Promotions & Marketing (asi/195744),
moving back to her home town after six years in Novato, CA.
The article talks about DeMattei personally, but also goes
into some real detail about promotional products, most
notably a direct-mail campaign she created for Macromedia�s
launch of a new software product that pulled an 80% response
rate. Several other clients were also mentioned, including
Mumm�s Champagne and the San Francisco Museum of Modern
HALO Names Burdi CFO Halo Branded Solutions/Lee Wayne
Corp. (asi/218450) has hired Michael Burdi as CFO,
replacing Jim Smith, who left to join another industry.
Burdi was formerly CFO of Raynor Manufacturing Co., a
garage-door concern, and will report to Marc Simon, HALO
CEO. His initial focus will be on HALO�s domestic
finances, and he will ultimately play a more direct role in
HALO�s overseas locations.
Madison�s �Back� Several months ago, we reported that we�d heard
from several sources that Madison And 29th (asi/68423)
had left the industry. However, as we noted then, we couldn�t
get confirmation on this, as everyone who had worked in the
promotional products end had left. While the latter was
indeed true, we�ve just heard that the rumor was
apparently false. Madison will not be leaving the industry,
and Dave Steinmetz has returned to the firm as sales
