Gene Cesario, MAS, administrator of Advertising Product Suppliers (APS), a recently established group of industry suppliers, polled all members regarding overseas suppliers. Over 80% of the membership indicated that it is opposed to foreign suppliers exhibiting at industry trade shows or becoming a member of industry trade organizations. And 96% want PPAI to redefine its requirements for supplier membership.

ASI Show Recognized By Expo The ASI Show was cited as a "Great Place to Work" in the March 2004 issue of EXPO magazine. In cooperation with the Society of Independent Show Organizers (SISO), the magazine surveyed for-profit exhibition firms, asking about hiring practices, promotion opportunities, salaries, benefits, perks, etc. The ASI Show was chosen a stand-out employer that goes out of its way to provide a positive and rewarding workplace. ASI Show president Matthew Cohn notes, "We believe we've been fortunate to attract and employ some of the industry's finest employees because of our opportunities, environment, and because we work hard to provide a very congenial atmosphere in which to do business."
Not Fired: "Apprentices" See Value Of Promotional Products
The value of promotional products has become apparent, even to those poor folks who want to work for Donald Trump. On a recent episode of "The Apprentice," the teams had to compete by running a pedicab business. Whoever brought in the most money with the two-passenger, one-peddler vehicles would be the winner. The winning team came up with the idea to put advertising on the back of the rickshaws. One of the advertisers would only do it if the drivers would also wear the firm's ballcap and T-shirt. Advertising helped them bring in $3,680, almost 10 times as much as the other team.
Canadian Distributor Clarifies Address
Distributor Wilson & Wilson (asi/361576) has been receiving U.S. catalogs on a regular basis, but lately many are being sent to another Canadian city and then forwarded. The problem: The firm's offices are on Guelph Street in the city of Kitchener, but catalogs are being mailed to Guelph Street in the city of Guelph, and the post office there is getting irate about forwarding mail to Kitchener on a regular basis. Therefore, please make sure that Wilson & Wilson's mailing address is correct in your files:
Wilson & Wilson
900 Guelph Street
Kitchener, ON Canada
Update Your ASI Files: Strata-Media Inc. (asi/337835) has named Andy Aranyi VP/business development, Amanda West new client services manager, and Dan Notti director for creative services.

Better To Be Bad First No one looks forward to breaking bad news to clients. The good news is that there's a better way to handle it. When you have good news and bad news to share, lay the bad news out first. A Boston University study shows that people, regardless of being optimists or pessimists, prefer bad news first. Why? It's often not as bad as they anticipated, and once they know what it is they can deal with it and move on. Getting the good news after that invariably lifts their spirits.
Try delivering the news like this: "The bad news is that the item you ordered is discontinued. The good news is that we've upgraded you to a similar, though superior, product at the same price."
PR For Companies That Outsource
Only 11% of firms that outsource jobs to other countries worry that doing so hurts their brand image, according to a Hewitt Associates survey. In addition, Hewitt reports that fewer than four in 10 analyze the local economic/political climate, and only one-third routinely examine the impact of global sourcing initiatives on the community or other stakeholders (34%). Public relations and outreach efforts for these companies, however, can be critical. Help these clients showcase the amount of business and resources they do contribute in their local communities through promotions that tie into U.S.-based charitable and educational initiatives.
