PSI SHOW: A FEW CHANGES, ALL GOOD
Based on initial reports from attendees, the 42nd annual PSI show in
Dusseldorf, Germany this week posted record attendance its first day,
with all five exhibit halls sold out. Part of the education program featured
European ESP and QuickStore, launched as a joint venture between ASI
and Reed Exhibitions, PSI’s parent company. There were also noticeably
fewer Americans in attendance than last year.
Want to see some smiles? Stop by and visit your manufacturing clients. The manufacturing index maintained by the Institute of Supply Management hit a 20-year high in December. ISM’s reading of 66.2 was 3.4 percentage points higher than the previous month. That last time that happened was December 1983, when Ronald Reagan occupied the White House. The manufacturing index has risen for the last six months, and the economy has grown for the last 26 months, the ISM notes. Although manufacturing jobs are still lagging, you might find more of your manufacturing clients willing to launch that safety or incentive program they’d been postponing.

ACADEMICS AND THE INDUSTRY
Did you (or an industry practitioner you know) not only attend college, but find the experience specifically helped you in the industry? In what ways? If you’d like to be interviewed for a future Counselor report, please send your name, company, title and as many details as possible about your (or a colleague’s) academic background and how it helped your promotional products career to firstname.lastname@example.org - or send a fax to Arn Bernstein at (215)953-3107.
The numbers are in for last week’s Orlando show, and the news has given folks in the industry a real shot of optimism. In all, a grand total of 4,960 distributors and reps walked the show floor over two days, a full 25% more than projected. And there was more good news at the show: In an instant electronic poll taken during education day, 74% of attendees said their profits were up in 2003.
There were the usual ASI Show staples, as well as a few other events: a spirited Hotseat Panel discussion by industry leaders, a celebration called the ASI Show Block Party at the Universal City Walk that drew 1,600 attendees, a Passport to Winnings drawing for attendees who visited the right booths, a breakfast keynote presentation from Rudy Giuliani and a special Counselor 50th Anniversary performance by Bill Cosby!
Up next: The Dallas ASI Show, January 28-30, featuring Grammy-nominated country star Pat Green at the Ultimate Texas Bash. Be sure to be there.
At the Las Vegas ASI Show in March, a panel of distributors and suppliers will discuss whether it’s fair for distributors to depend on extended supplier terms to carry them month-to-month (and sometimes order-to-order). Are extended terms really no different than EQP or other favorable pricing? Or should suppliers simply stick to manufacturing? Are you a distributor who does this, or are you adamantly against it? Suppliers: Do you have no trouble with extended terms, or have you been burned because of them? If you’d like to be considered as a potential panelist (or be part of the audience, if you’re too stage-shy), let us know ASAP. Send an email to: email@example.com.
- On pages 27 and 41 of the December 2003 Counselor, the comments by Mike Fey, MAS of Fey Line (asi/54040) in the article regarding Norwood Promotional Products’ latest activities were actually about Norwood’s arrangement with PSI-20/20 Inc, as opposed to its overall practice of seeking new sales channels, exclusive partnerships with distributors, and offering integrated-services capabilities.
- Last week’s PromoGram item about the FedEx-Kinko’s deal mentioned a distributor that had sold products through Kinko’s. Since several different distributors and suppliers have similar names, we thought we would clarify this report. The distributor in question is Awards.com LLC (asi/128242). Awards.com is no longer operating in Kinko’s store and has sued Kinko’s for $1 billion after the copy-center chain pulled out of the deal.
The Counselor will begin reporting distributor assignments of mid-sized and large companies as “promotional products agencies of record.” If you’re privileged enough to become the exclusive(or near-exclusive) distributor for your client, help us call your achievement to national attention. It’s favorable PR for you and your client, and you’ll help the industry grow another step. Send your info to firstname.lastname@example.org. Include the name/city/state of your client, and a brief description of its business. If the assignment was due to an imaginative presentation, tell us more about it. If it’s for one or more specific marketing missions/goals, that would be useful too.
New England Business Services, parent firm of the distributor of the same name (asi/282590), has acquired assets of the Stephen Fossler Co., a manufacturer of embossed anniversary seals and retail signage.
ESP NOW ONLINE
ASI announces ESP Online, a dramatically improved version of ESP, its well-known product research tool. ESP Online includes a redesign of the user interface, elimination of the requirement for a DVD/hardware and new pricing, allowing distributors to subscribe to the service for their entire sales team.
ESP Online lets users find products using thousands of possible search criteria. They can then immediately create a presentation to email or fax to clients. The database contains data and high-quality images for over 650,000 promotional products from 3,000 leading suppliers. Subscribers will be able to use the database from virtually any Windows-compatible personal computer with Internet access. Another benefit: The database will be refreshed continuously, ensuring that subscribers have the latest products, pricing and descriptive info. Our research indicates that users can employ ESP Online in under 30 minutes, far quicker than with the former product and faster than any competitor. A sneak-preview demo will be featured at the ASI Show in Dallas, January 28-30.
ASItransact has enabled even more of its customers to seamlessly connect ASItransact with their shipping systems via the Internet. ASItransact is now compatible with most major shipping systems, making automated shipping and tracking information - and the enhanced efficiency that comes with it - available to a greater number of customers and without custom programming. The feature, first introduced late last year, allows suppliers to automatically transfer tracking information directly to ASItransact the same day an order ships, providing immediate tracking notifications to distributors in a single location. Suppliers don’t require any additional programming or software to integrate their shipping system with ASItransact.
According to Dale Denham, ASI senior vice president, customers are responding favorably to the new upgrades, and over 100 suppliers have integrated their shipping systems with ASItransact in the last three months. “It’s simple to implement, expedites the order and delivery process and reduces phone calls for the distributors and suppliers,” he says. “That’s what ASItransact is all about.” He notes that several new companies, including Dunbrooke (asi/50930) and Alexander Manufacturing (asi/34040), have taken advantage of the new integration in the past few days.

According to a new survey by WorldatWork (www.worldatwork.org) and the National Association for Employee Recognition, businesses are expanding their employee recognition programs and starting new ones with more frequency than ever before. Nearly 90% of companies surveyed have recognition programs already in place, and most of these companies feel the programs are meeting their goals. While the majority of the awards are given for length of service or performance, companies are also adding new awards for safety, attendance, ideas, teamwork building and efficiency.
And consider this: Another new study notes that Americans have the dubious honor of being the most overworked and over-stressed workforce. Three out of five Americans feel pressure to work too much, and more than four out of five wish they had more free time to spend with their families. The real tell-tale sign? More than half would gladly give up a day’s pay each week for a day off.
If your clients don’t have an employee recognition/retention program in place to reward their employees, you might want to point out the vast numbers of companies that do and offer up some case studies showing how promotional products-driven campaigns were immensely effective and scored huge ROI.
Nearly 80% of businesses surveyed by City Business Journals Network said they’re optimistic about their firms’ growth prospects in 2004, and nearly one-third plan to increase their spending. This optimism is also reflected in promotional products distributors/suppliers attitudes, according to audience surveys conducted at The Orlando ASI Show. Of over 300 attendees at a January 4 “Lunch & Learn,” 83% either agreed or strongly agreed that 2004 would be a much better year than 2003. In addition, 93% said they expect their personal sales to increase.
