Trend Alert: Collagen-Infused Garments

As the athleisure trend continues to shape the garment industry and drive consumer demand, one company is turning to a unique fabric construction that may have a major impact on the apparel market, including promo.

Seattle-based technical clothing company Buki has recently created a line of women’s apparel that contains collagen, a type of protein lauded for its health benefits. The new Collagen Collection from the company, co-founded by Joey Rodolfo [who also happens to be the co-founder and former senior vice president of design at Cutter & Buck (asi/47965)], contains collagen peptides. The collagen-infused clothes not only offer a comfortable feel, but also moisturize the skin and provide UPF 50 sun protection and odor neutralization, according to Buki. Currently, Buki offers four long-sleeve women’s top styles, including a hoodie, as well as a neck scarf and pillow cover.

The marine collagen in the apparel is sustainably sourced from a shallow-swimming white fish. The scales are turned into a fine powder and then infused into the cellulose fiber. The garments are designed to be worn close to the body for optimal skin softening, which also makes them perfect for layering purposes.

Rodolfo says he started working on an innovative fabric construction with collagen about 15 years ago, but “after 10 to 20 washes, the infusion would wash out,” he told Seattle Magazine. Buki’s current Collagen Collection has been tested by two fiber-testing companies, and is machine-washable and wrinkle-resistant. “The collagen is actually in the fiber so it’s never going away,” said co-founder Stacy Bennett.

Already, there’s significant social media buzz over the collection. New York-based blogger Pamela Lipton recently took the Collagen Turtleneck for a spin:

And POPSUGAR Beauty had this to say about the Scoop Neck:

Quite the testimonial.

Buki says a sleeping mask, several men’s styles, and additional colors -- including jet black, pearl grey and blush pink -- are in the works.
