The 53rd Annual PSI Show Opens
The show, too, continues to grow, with a 2.4% increase in exhibitors – 873 from over 30 countries, up from last year's 852. Additionally, many of Europe's largest suppliers – PFConcept, MidOcean, New Wave, Senator – who had refrained from exhibiting in recent years were back at the show as official exhibitors, joining such other prominent suppliers as Xindao, Elasto-Form and Giving Europe.
"There's no longer anxiety in the promotional industry in Europe; it's showing faith," said Ralf Oster, CEO of PFConcept. "PF was missed (when we hadn't exhibited for a few years) and now we're surprising people with a new, fresh look and spirit."
Regarding market trends, eco issues are very much on the forefront of discussions, much more so than in the North American promotional market. Distributor attendees often query exhibitors about the chain of a product's development and if the items were created in an eco-friendly manner. To this end, PSI has created its first-ever Sustainability Awards, to be presented in categories such as "ecology" and "social issues."
"I found the PSI show to be very inspiring," said Mark Ziskind, COO of Top 40 distributor CSE (asi/155807) and a first-time attendee to the show. "The level of creativity on the suppliers' part, the retail-oriented product offerings, and the overall sense of fashion was amazing. You really need to attend the PSI show to get a full understanding of the global marketplace and how we can all collectively take this industry to the next level."
Next year's PSI Show will be held from January 13-15. For more information, go to www.psi-network.de.
Hanesbrands Inc. Sues Gildan
In the complaint, Hanesbrands says that Gildan entered the U.S. market with Tempfx in early 2014 and unfairly benefited from consumer awareness sparked by X-Temp in shared distribution channels. As a result, Hanesbrands is asking the federal court to enjoin Gildan from using the Tempfx trademark. The apparel provider is also demanding damages and an accounting of Gildan profits from use of the trademark.
Matt Hall, vice president/chief communications officer at Hanesbrands, says the company feels the lawsuit speaks for itself and that Hanes does not have additional comment. Stéphanie Gaucher, a corporate communications manager at Gildan, provided the following statement to Counselor: "While we deny the allegations stated in this proceeding, out of respect for the standard litigation process, we cannot comment nor discuss this pending lawsuit."
The sparring between Hanesbrands and Gildan began prior to this month's lawsuit filing. Last year, Gildan started seeking a trademark for Tempfx. Hanesbrands has filed an official objection to that request.
Chocolate Inn Acquires A La Carte
A big reason for the excitement is that, through the deal, Chocolate Inn/Taylor & Grant has expanded its offerings to include new flexographic printing, custom candy imprinting and more die-cutting capabilities. In addition, the supplier firm will be adding a range of new products, such as customizable multicolor bags in a range of sizes, fortune cookies, mini roll mints and more. Overall, Chocolate Inn/Taylor & Grant expects to bolster its food gift product line this year with more than 75 new items from A La Carte.
"We believe that our distributor customers will benefit from the growing product assortment," said Miller. "And, we look forward to servicing and interacting with the A La Carte customers and introducing them to the expanded offerings of the Chocolate Inn/Taylor & Grant family."
Mike Shulkin, A La Carte's president, is joining Chocolate Inn/Taylor & Grant as Midwest regional sales manager. "Adding A La Carte products and capabilities to the Chocolate Inn/Taylor & Grant product line will give us the most extensive food and candy line in the industry," said Shulkin.
Polyconcept Announces Sale of ADM Division
The company was bought out by an investor group led by the ADM management team. No additional debt was accrued in the acquisition by the investor group, which has agreed to inject new financing into ADM. Financial details of the transaction were not revealed.
"This is a very exciting development for ADM," said Justin Barton, CEO of ADM. "We are fortunate to have a stable business platform, the best people in our market and a global infrastructure we can build on. As a standalone business, we will have flexibility and focus to continue the development of our capabilities to better serve our clients."
Gemline Announces New Partnership
"With its innovative stylus technology and reputation for quality, Lynktec is the perfect complement to Gemline's product portfolio," said Bret Clemens, vice president of sales at Gemline.
Based in Chicago, Lynktec was established in 2011. The company is known for its modern, innovative styluses and other technology-related products, including screen-cleaning cloths, mobile device cases and tablet stands. "We have a passion for tech gadgets and design," said Bob Martin, Lynktec co-founder and vice president of sales. "Gemline has a reputation for innovative, on-trend design and quality products, so our partnership was a natural fit."
Gemline ranks as the 17th-largest supplier in the industry, after reporting 2013 North American ad specialty sales of $92 million, an increase of 1.1% over the previous year.
