A deep hue, reminiscent of maroon, Marsala is Pantone’s 2015 Color of the Year. According to Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute, “ Much like the fortified wine that gives marsala its name, this tasteful hue embodies the satisfying richness of a fulfilling meal while its grounding red-brown roots emanate a sophisticated, natural earthiness.”
“This is a color that works across all demographics,” says Designer Mariana Leung, founder and editor of Ms. Fabulous Media. “It works for interiors, menswear and women’s clothing. It all depends on how a designer uses it.” Leung says this tone works well on wool and silk fabrics, as well as jewels, knits and accessories.
When it comes to gender appeal, marsala is not strongly masculine or feminine, so it can suit everyone well. When choosing promotional apparel in this shade, consider which colors might pop against it in a logo or decoration. “Cream or navy would be nice contrast colors,” Leung says. “For complementary colors, tonal red, rust and sand would be pretty too.”
Pantone suggests it’s “highly compatible with amber, umber and golden yellows, greens in both turquoise and teal, and blues in the more vibrant range.”
