Showcase: Headwear

Why does headwear continue to increase in popularity? Everyone wears hats. "It's an economical way to spread your company's name, idea or message," says Don DeZarn, president of Pacific Headwear Inc. (asi/75660). "Starting at age 8, kids need caps for teams right up through high school. Supporting teams takes adults through generations. On the promotional side, there's a large market for urban and street brands, but everyone wears tried-and-true promo caps."

Dave Porter, vice president of Sportsman Cap & Bag (asi/88877), agrees. The audience, he says, "ranges from Little Leaguers to ladies, golfers to NASCAR fans, and everyone in between." Porter also points out the advantage of selling hats in any economy: "Headwear sells when the economy is strong because people love hats and knits. It sells when the economy is weak because of its advertising effectiveness."

According to DeZarn, black and navy are popular colors. "Trendy neons help drive sales, but are combined with proven colors," he says. When buying hats, he says, people look for quality, a comfortable fit and distinctive styling. Porter adds, "A flat bill is hot right now." In the ad specialty industry, Porter says, headwear demographics trend toward males and people between the ages of 18 and 50. He sees industry sales expanding from 6% closer to 10% as the industry grows.
