Niche: Biker Apparel/Accessories

Believe it or not, in the promotional industry, end-users who crave biker-style apparel and accessories are not typically motorcycle gang members. (They get their gear elsewhere.) According to Dino Damelio, president of Apparelstar (asi/36539), wearers of this style of promotional apparel tend to be “weekend warrior” types – business professionals who are adopting the biker look for fashion and/or for a cause. Various charities sponsor “Ride for …” events to raise money and awareness, and that’s where the market for logoed biker gear revs up.

“They typically don’t want heavy cow leather,” Damelio says, which tends to be stiff and limits motion. “They want lighter-weight, more flexible materials like lambskin or soft buffalo leather.” In addition to leather jackets, end-users in this market favor motorcycle vests, driving gloves, and – less often – helmets. The preferred color is black 99% of the time, he mentions, with brown being a distant second. “Decoration on leather motorcycle jackets is mostly patches,” he notes, and for the vests, patches and pins are the most common choices.

If your local businesses are thinking of sponsoring a fundraising event, pitch the biker theme to kick up lots of interest and profit.
