Blankets

Blankets make great gifts around the holidays for top clients and valued employees. They’re also excellent additions to university bookstores and winter resort gift shops. Consider that nearly 20 million Americans snowboard and ski; that’s a lot of people who could use the warming of a resort-branded blanket!

CASE STUDY

‘Comforting’ Employees

When it comes to Terry Town’s (asi/90913) Shearling-Lined Micro Mink Comforter (DP1720), sampling is believing.

So says Valerie Retan. She knows from firsthand experience: After she presented a client with a sample of the plush blanket, the buyer ordered more than 300 of the snuggle-encouraging product. “If I had to think of one adjective to describe this blanket, the word would be ‘luxurious,’” says Retan, a manager in Holden Brand’s (asi/226065) online division.

What makes the sale especially remarkable is that the client – an oil and gas company – initially came to Retan with an interest in safety kits. But rather than just take the order, Retan got consultative, speaking with the client to learn their underlying objective. This led her to understand that the company was really seeking a quality gift to give employees. With the safety kit options failing to fully impress, Retan asked the buyer if she would be open to other product considerations. An affirmative answer led Retan to pitch the micro mink comforter. “We had just done a self-promo with the blanket and we all loved it,” she says. “I had a feeling the client would too.”

That feeling was spot on. “Once they had it in their hands, they absolutely loved it,” says Retan. Embroidered with the client’s logo, the high-end blanket communicated to employees the warmth and appreciation the company wished to convey.

When it comes to markets the blanket will sell well in, Retan says the sky is the limit. “It can be an appreciation gift, an anniversary present. It’s for anyone who wants to really impress the recipient.”
