Effectiveness Of Promo Products Part Of Agenda

Industry Execs Take To WashingtonIn the fourth annual PPAI Legislative Education and Action Day (LEAD), nearly 70 professionals from the ad specialty industry met in person with numerous members of Congress last week. On the agenda: the effectiveness of promotional products, the status of independent contractors, and the impact that tax changes have on businesses in the industry.

The two-day PPAI LEAD event, which was held in Washington D.C. from April 10-11, resulted in nearly 300 meetings with both Senators and members of the House of Representatives. Chuck Machion, ASI's senior counsel, joined the PPAI LEAD delegation and met with Senator Joe Manchin (D-WV), as well as Congressmen Michael Fitzpatrick (R-PA), Patrick Meehan (R-PA) and Timothy Murphy (R-PA). "It was a great experience," Machion said. "Everyone devoted a significant amount of their time both before and during the event to ensure that our Washington D.C. representatives realize not only the importance of advertising specialties, but also that our industry with its over $19 billion in annual sales and 430,000-plus employees is a significant economic engine in the country and their respective states."

As part of the PPAI LEAD initiative, PPAI also named Representative Erik Paulsen (R-MN) as the association's 2013 Legislator of the Year, which recognizes members of Congress who have shown a commitment to small-business interests and a willingness to meet with industry professionals. "Congressman Paulsen has championed the cause of small business and met face-to-face with industry leaders," said Paul Bellantone, PPAI's president and CEO. "He has established a history of being available and listening to the concerns of promotional products businesses and supporting or opposing legislation that impacts the industry."
