Oversized and all-over imprints on T-shirts are trends that have decorators expanding their printing capabilities. The look is dramatic but achieving the result needn't be difficult. Here are a few equipment options to help you take advantage of demand.

The new MHM Synchroprint X-Type automatic textile press – available from Hirsch International (asi/14982) – yields increased speed and the ability to screen print any size from full chest to all-over graphic. The new press includes a generous 20-inch by 23-inch print area and, if that's not big enough, an oversize version with a 32-inch by 40-inch print area. Combined with advanced technologies for faster, more efficient production, this machine will have a decorator producing oversized and all-over imprints quickly and easily.

Sawgrass Technologies offers inks, drivers and printing solutions that can be used with off-the-shelf printers for a low-cost way to get into large sublimated imprints. For example, the Epson Stylus Pro 9700 for Sawgrass' SubliJet-E Professional sublimation printing system is designed for all-over T-shirt printing. It offers image sizes up to 44 inches wide and throughput up to 196 square feet per hour. "With sublimation, the user will also need a heat press of suitable size for the production process,” says Jimmy Lamb, manager of communication and education for Sawgrass.

With metallic inkjet printer/cutters like the VersaCAMM VS (offered in 30-, 40- and 64-inch widths) or the Versa Studio BN-20 (20-inch width desktop version), you can print and contour cut colorful heat transfers for T-shirts, sweatshirts, bags and hats, all with stunning metallic effects. "As wide-format devices, these inkjets allow you to decorate every inch of your T-shirt for the high-impact styles you find in boutiques,” says Laurie Weller, spokesperson for Roland DGA. She suggests pairing the inkjet with HeatSoft Transfer Material and Polyester Transfer Mask for brilliantly colored, long-lasting imprints that have a soft hand.

Another approach to consider for oversized imprints is to go with direct-to-garment printing. Don Copeland, digital products manager at ColDesi Inc., recommends the DTG Viper with a print area of 16.5 inches by 29 inches, "allowing for extra-wide and super-long prints,” he says. For a machine that prints twice as fast as the Viper, try the DTG M2. It has a slightly smaller print area (16.5 inches by 24 inches) but still can produce an oversized imprint of impressive quality.
