He Was 97

George TownesGeorge Townes, a second-generation owner and president emeritus of supplier Shepenco (asi/86850), died on Sunday, September 9 following a brief illness. He was 97. Throughout his professional adult life, Townes worked to build the Shepenco brand, expanding the company's presence across the country and turning the supplier into a perennial winner of Counselor's Distributor Choice Award. He served in several positions in the company, including manager and president.

Townes also was part of the greatest generation of Americans, fighting bravely in World War II, earning a bronze star and retiring with the military rank of colonel. In the community of Shelbyville, TN, Townes was especially well-known and admired. He was a member of the Jaycees and the Shelbyville Rotary Club, was a project leader for construction of Shelbyville's first public swimming pool, helped plan the construction of Bedford County General Hospital, and contributed to the city's urban renewal of the 1950s and early 1960s.

Townes is survived by a daughter, Jane, a son and daughter-in-law, Dan and Natalie, grandsons Ben, Travis, Jeffrey, Daniel and Andy, granddaughters-in-law Megan and Becca, and great grandson Sully. Memorial services will be held tomorrow at 1:00 p.m. at Doak-Howell Funeral Home, with burial to follow at Hillcrest Memorial Gardens in Shelbyville, TN. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Bedford County Imagination Library in care of Argie Cooper Public Library.
