Obituary: Jerry O’Boyle, Journalbooks
He Was 81
Jerome “Jerry” O’Boyle, the founder of supplier firm Journalbooks/Timeplanner Calendars (asi/91340), passed away on Saturday. He was 81.
O’Boyle, who was born September 4, 1932 in Brooklyn, NY, had a fascination with graphic arts from a young age, with one of his earliest jobs being with The Bay Ridge Reporter, a local newspaper. After attending Villanova and City College of NY and graduating with a BA in advertising, he went to work for Emerson Radio. From there he joined Davidson Printing Equipment, a division of Merganthaler Lynotype, as advertising manager, which led him from New York to Charlotte, NC. O’Boyle later accepted a position with Xerox, which relocated him and his family in 1967 to Surrey, England, where he worked on a joint venture between Xerox and the Rank Corporation. After returning to the U.S. in 1971, O’Boyle left Xerox and returned to Charlotte to create Timeplanner Calendars and enter the ad specialty industry.
One of O’Boyle’s greatest achievements, though, was raising 10 children along with his wife of 62 years, Joan Minor O'Boyle. In fact, O’Boyle was joined in the Journalbooks family business by six of his sons, who later oversaw the company being acquired by Polyconcept North America in 2007 and winning Counselor’s Supplier of the Year award in 2008.
O’Boyle was predeceased by his firstborn son, John Michael, as well as his parents and brother, Anthony O'Boyle. He is survived by his wife, Joan, and nine children, Irene R. Single (Wayne), James E. O'Boyle (Maria), Thomas P. O'Boyle (Christine), Lawrence E. O'Boyle, Anne M. Boatenreiter, Joseph A. O'Boyle, Maureen J. O'Boyle, Timothy F. O'Boyle, and Patrick J.
