OK, so the “experts” have confirmed what the American people have known in their guts all along: We are in a recession. Let’s deal with it, shall we?

A recent article in USA Today suggested that certain personalities handle economic downturns better than others. Psychologist Frank Farley of Temple University in Philadelphia told the newspaper that “Type T” personalities “are thrill seekers who tend to be self-confident, are often creative and innovative, have high energy and believe they control their own fate.” He says this type just might view these uncertain times as an opportunity.

There was also an online quiz (you can take the quiz at www.asicentral.com/asp/open/news/advantages/personalityquiz.asp) you could take to gauge whether you are terrified or Type T … some of the questions/statements (with true-or-false answers) were: “I believe I control my destiny;” “I am a highly creative person;” “Friends would call me a thrill seeker;” and “I like to challenge authority.” If you answered “true” to each of these, you probably lean toward Type T, like me. And that’s good news for you.

More good news: This month’s edition of Advantages provides plenty of ideas and inspiration to help you better deal with the state we’re in, too, and also look for the opportunities. Shane Dale’s feature article, “7 Cost-Cutting Strategies,” offers what we call, “your very own economic stimulus package.”

Pat Cavanaugh’s “Superstar Selling” column grabbed me with the headline, “Now’s No Time for Stinkin’ Thinkin’.” Pat’s number-one suggestion? Get rid of the attitude, gloomy Gus. He gives awesome advice on weathering this particular storm successfully, including a quote from Abe Lincoln (you’ve heard of him, no?), which is very, very similar to something my ever-optimistic mom always says when things become less than ideal … and sometimes downright difficult:

“This too shall pass.” And it will.

All the best for a happy, healthy and profitable 2009!
