PSI Düsseldorf Show Opens
Managing Director Says European Promo Market Down 3.1% Overall
The 51st annual PSI Show in Düsseldorf, Germany, opened yesterday with a total of 962 exhibitors (down from 993 last year) and attendance expected to reach last year's number (16,167). Michael Freter, the show's managing director, noted in his opening address that the European promotional market is down 3.1% overall, with specific countries, such as Greece, down significantly at 33.2%. Germany, by comparison, is down .8%. "As a result, the German market frequently proves to be a lifeline for many international suppliers," Freter said.
Patrick Politze, chairman of GWW, a German association which monitors sales trends in the European market, noted that sales of promotional products in Germany were 3.5 billion euros in 2012. "Around 12,000 large companies in Germany ensure 8% of promotional products turnover," he said.
Trends on the show floor included a marked increase in apparel suppliers, particularly from Turkey, and a greater emphasis on product safety and sustainability, with many suppliers able to provide information on products' components and manufacturing history.
