Planning For October
 |
October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month - A cure in our lifetime
Breast cancer is the most common type of cancer after lung cancer. Last year the American Cancer Society estimated there were more than 180,000 new cases of breast cancer and over 40,000 deaths from the disease. Encourage your employees to have a yearly screening or support a run/walk for the cure event (find local events at www.komen.org). There are lots of related promotional products and many of the manufacturers donate a portion of the proceeds to the Susan G. Komen For The Cure foundation.
October 3: World Smile Day - Pearly whites
World Smile Day is dedicated to recognizing good works and cheer, and it’s a perfect opportunity for dentists and orthodontists to promote dental hygiene. Toothbrushes and toothpaste are perfect promotional items, and just what the doctor ordered.
October 4: World Card Making Day - Make it personal
Whether you’re getting a head start for holidays or you just want to send your clients a simple greeting, consider the personal touch with a handmade and handwritten card. Recipients will feel important as you’ve gone the extra step. Send with a custom bookmark or other small token of appreciation.
October 5-11: Fire Prevention Week - Stop, drop and roll
Any company can get involved with its community by sponsoring the local fire department and mailing fire-prevention checklists to everyone in the area. Or, provide the local elementary schools fire-prevention coloring books. And don’t forget about your employees; show your softer side by providing everyone with a new smoke detector for their homes.
October 8: National Bring Your Teddy Bear to Work Day - My teddy
Whether you bring your own, or borrow your child’s for the day, today’s the day to bring a little comfort to the office. Or, provide a small bear wearing a custom-logoed T-shirt for all your employees.
October 12-18: Build Your Business with Business Cards Week - Do you have my card?
Everyone has a business card, but, does yours stand out? Talk to your distributor about creating unique cards, like one that doubles as a bookmark or one that can pop-up into shapes. There are a number of products that can incorporate your business card that would make excellent leave-behind gifts.
October 13: Navy’s Birthday - In the Navy…
The U.S. Navy was created today in 1775 when the Second Continental Congress authorized the acquisition of ships and establishment of a Navy. Thank sailors for all they do by sending “thank-you” gift-baskets to local fleets. And provide gift cards for students at neighborhood schools so they can send personalized message as an added treat.
October 24: First Barrel Jump Over Niagara Falls Anniversary - The first daredevil
Annie Edson Taylor, a 63-year old former dance teacher attempted her jump over Niagara Falls today in 1901. She did so, successfully, in a 160-pound barrel. While Niagara Falls is a picturesque spot for corporate meetings it might not be within your budget. Don’t fret, use the day for a promotion that plays of the theme of “great fetes” with barrel shaped pen-and-pencil holders.
October 26: Mother-In-Law Day - Mother-in-law dearest
Flower shops, book stores and candy makers should take this opportunity to offer Mother-In-Law Day specials. An unexpected gift could help mend strained relations or reward those second mothers for their love and support.
October 1-31: National Popcorn Poppin’ Month - Healthy snack
Air-popped popcorn is inherently high in fiber, low in calories and fat, contains no sodium and is sugar free. Gyms, health clubs and yoga studios could really win over potential clients by sending a popcorn-mailer and coupon for a free training session.
