King Louie Saved by Son of Co-founder
King Louie International Inc. (asi/64860), which recently announced plans to cease all operations, has reached an agreement in principle to sell its domestic manufacturing division to Michael Lerner of Overland Park, KS. The new name of the supplier will be King Louie American. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Lerner is the son of the late Morris Lerner, who in 1937 co-founded what eventually became King Louie International. “We were relieved not only for our employees at the plant but because of the customer base we’ve grown,” says John McMillan, current vice president of sales for King Louie International.

King Louie American will move its warehousing and decoration operations from its facility in Grandview, MO, to Overland Park, but will continue to use its Grandview plant for customer service and shipping until the transition is complete. Brett Hackworth, current president and CEO of King Louie International, will become CEO of King Louie American, while McMillan will become vice president of sales and marketing for the new company.

  The ASI Show Orlando Rescheduled
As first reported in a Breaking News alert yesterday, The ASI Show announced that it is rescheduling next year's Orlando show to January 18-20, 2007, eliminating the conflict created when PPAI shifted its Expo to ASI's original show date of Jan. 3-5. The ASI Show Orlando will still be held at the Orlando/Orange County Convention Center. Education Day will be on Thursday, Jan. 18, while exhibits will be open Friday and Saturday, Jan. 19-20.

"We became aware of PPAI's date change the same time the industry was notified," says Matthew Cohn, president of The ASI Show. "The ASI Show has spent the last six

weeks working diligently with the Orlando/Orange County Convention Center, as well as hotels, to secure dates that are in the best interest of our suppliers and distributors. While we had to renegotiate about 12 contracts with vendors during the past few weeks, and pay a significant amount of money to move other events scheduled for our new dates in Orlando, we felt having The ASI Show Orlando at the same time as another major industry show was not the right thing to do."

Drinkware Suppliers Merge
Beverageware suppliers Thermo-Serv LTD (asi/91080) and Betras Plastics Inc. (asi/40360) reached a deal last week to combine the two companies, with over 75 years experience and over $40 million in promotional product sales combined. Terms of the deal were undisclosed. “Their business model and our business model fit together like a puzzle piece,” says Nathan Long, president of the Dallas-based Thermo-Serv. “We matched up quite well. Their customer base compliments our market. It just made a lot of business sense.”

With the merger, Long expects a new 100,000 square-foot facility and about 80

new positions to be created in Dallas for the new Thermo-Serv/Betras, while the 110 jobs at the Betras plant in Spartanburg, SC, will be phased out. Long says he has offered positions to many Betras employees; so far, 10 have accepted. Thermo-Serv currently has about 350 employees. “Everyone’s been lifting their glass up and toasting (Betras President and CEO) Joe Betras,” Long says. “We are deeply grateful to have the opportunity to merge the businesses together.”

  Hot Market: Health Care Incentives
Here’s a scary statistic: The projected vacancy rate for registered nurses for 2010 is 2 million. Given that the number of Baby Boomers requiring health care is growing every year, the shortage of nurses — and health care workers in general — is certainly alarming, two health care executives told a group of attendees at the National Association for Employee Recognition’s Annual Sharing Conference, which is being held this week in Naples, FL. “This is a real crisis,” Katie Chamblee, vice president of human resources for Seton Health Corporation of North America, told the crowd yesterday.

The projected shortage, though, represents an opportunity for promotional products professionals looking for new clients. Indeed, Chamblee detailed how her company recently spent about $250,000 on incentives to attract and retain more health care workers. The program included giving managers an incentive “toolkit” that contained a variety of spontaneous rewards to dole out to deserving employees, such as certificates they could redeem for jewelry, clocks, radios and other merchandise. The program, launched in 2003, has resulted in a turnover decrease of 4% — and a net savings of more than $2 million, according to Chamblee.
