U.S. and
China Reach Deal On
Textile
Imports
The United States and China signed a deal this morning limiting imports of Chinese
clothing and textile products into the United States. Chinese imports surged
54% in the first eight month of this year to $17.7 billion. This new deal, which
lasts through 2008, will take effect January 1 and will cover 34 clothing and
textile categories. The agreement allows for imports in these categories to increase
by 8% to 10% in 2006, by 12.5% in 2007 and by 15% to 16% in 2008.

As
a result, the industry may see a change
in countries that are importing apparel
to the U.S., says Marty Lott, president
of Counselor Top 40 supplier
SanMar (asi/84863). “We
didn’t expect 2005 to be the
end of quotas from China,” he
says. “The reality is that it
just sort of shifts where goods are
coming from. You may be getting something
from Cambodia now that you will be
getting from China in three years because
it was Chinese fabric to start with
and they were selling it in Cambodia
because of quota. The reality is that
these other countries are going to
have to figure out how to compete.
Some will do really well and some will
not.”
