Montblanc Suing Cross Over Fountain Pen Refills
Montblanc, the luxury pen brand that’s available in the promotional products industry, has filed a federal lawsuit against Counselor Top 40 supplier A.T. Cross Inc. (asi/47520), claiming that Cross is printing the Montblanc name on packages of fountain pen refills. According to the Associated Press, the suit says the Montblanc name is printed three times in bold lettering on the package. The package does not bear the Cross name, but does include Penatia, a Cross brand. The Montblanc suit asks the court to order Cross to stop selling the refills and requests more than $175,000 damages. Cross was not yet ready to comment on the suit, a company spokesperson told PromoGram.


4imprint Bounces Back
Top 40 distributor 4imprint (asi/197045) made money across the board in the first half of the year, as the promotional products market improved and the effects of its British parent company’s restructuring started kicking in. Because of a weak dollar and some internal problems, 4imprint’s American operations had been blamed for dragging down the firm’s overall performance, but this year things have turned around. Adventures In Advertising (asi/109480), 4imprint’s franchising subsidiary, posted an operating profit of $783,000 in the first six months of 2004. In the corresponding period in 2003, AIA posted a $2.4 million loss, mostly because 4imprint was restructuring the division by closing franchises and cleaning up bad debt. This year so far, AIA’s overall sales are up 1% to $56 million, and the catalog-driven sales in the so-called U.S. Direct Marketing divisions are up 15% to $33 million. That division earned $1.4 million in operating profit, up considerably from $13,000 profit a year ago.


  
Hurricane Loans Available
The Small Business Administration is offering personal and business loans to people affected by Hurricane Ivan and other storms that have resulted in a federal disaster declaration. Businesses can get up to $1.5 million in loans to repair damage to offices and equipment, and to meet operating expenses. Homeowners can get loans up to $200,000 to fix homes and residents can get up to $40,000 to replace furniture and other personal property. Interest rates are around 3%, and terms can be as long as 30 years. To get started, victims must first call the Federal Emergency Management Agency at (800)621-FEMA.

Effective immediately, Hy Brownstein has resigned as president of Top 40 supplier Uniflex Inc. (asi/92480) to pursue other interests. Uniflex is currently going through Chapter 11 reorganization, as reported in PromoGram a number of issues back, as well as in the August Counselor. Brownstein says he prefers to make no additional comment at this time.
