Norwood Announces Compliance With CPSIA

Counselor Top 40 supplier Norwood Promotional Products has announced it has retained a consulting firm to ensure its children's items fully comply with the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act of 2008 (CPSIA). In addition, Norwood has included a page on its Web site (www.norwood.com) where it provides certificates of compliance and conformity that are required by CPSIA directives. The company has also launched a program called Safety Search, an online resource that details safety test reporting. Registered distributors can access safety information and specific reports for products.

Passed with near unanimous congressional support last August, the CPSIA is designed to require mandatory testing of any items that might be used by children. The testing and subsequent certification process is meant to assure children's products and the materials used to make those products are safe. The CPSIA applies to a broad range of items, including apparel, toys, books and sports gear. Following criticism about the law's effect on small businesses, the Consumer Product Safety Commission voted last month to grant a limited one-year stay on parts of the legislation, hoping to allow time for rules to be more clearly defined and exemptions to be granted.

Norwood is one of several industry suppliers to continue planned testing and reinforcement of safety measures as if the stay had not been granted. Norwood offers 49 children's products in its 2009
